Adult Education

BRIC provides adult learning opportunities to people from Blyth and the surrounding areas. There are a variety of courses ranging from basic computers, maths, English, languages, family history, philosophy, graphic design and more. Training takes place in a friendly and informal environment and the courses are both accredited and non-accredited so you can gain nationally recognised qualifications or just learn for pleasure. There are courses to cater for all interests and abilities.

What is UK Online

BRIC also registered as a UK Online Centre in January 2011. The UK online centre network was set up by government in 1999 to provide public access to computers. The Government's aim is to get one million more people online by 2013 in order to improve individual lives, strengthen communities and achieve social inclusion. At BRIC we provide courses in Basic Computing, understanding job hunting online and support with interviews skills.

UKOnline objectives

To reach those with limited skills and qualifications who are unlikely to take part in traditional forms of learning.
To equip people with skills they need for employability, thereby strengthening the skills of the workforce and increasing the country's productivity.
To deliver these skills innovatively through the use of new technologies.

Mon 23rd Jan 2012 (10.00-12.00)	Drug & Alcohol Awareness Level 1The first basic session will provide an overview of this subject enabling learners to ask more questions. A second more detailed look at drugs use will take place during the advanced session. This will also include a look at the various ingredients added to drugs, price of drugs on the street, and a closer look at some of the paraphernalia associated with their use. Mon 23rd Jan 2012 (13.00-16.00)	Drug & Alcohol Awareness Level 2The course will enable learners to gain more understanding of the world of drug misuse, whether the drugs are illegal or commonly and legally available. We'll be looking at how drug effect are influenced by a range of factors, not just the drugs themselves. Learners will discover the different effects of some drugs and how people actually get these substances into their bodies. Not only will we look at the law, regarding drug misuse, but the various levels of harm that users risk through their drug use.	Blyth Resource & Initiative Centre

You will gain essential knowledge, understanding and skills at the same time as learning the job. Mon 23rd Jan 2012 (10.00 - 12.00)	ArchaeologyThis course will take a look at a number of archaeological sites in Northumberland that have been excavated in recent years. This will give us a picture of the development of hunter-gatherers, farmers and urban communities, ranging in date from 10,000 years ago up to Roman occupation of Britain. Mon 23rd Jan 2012 (13.00-15.00)	Internet GenealogyThe course will look at the pros & cons of the internet as a research tool, basic navigation skills, pay per visit sites versus free to use, hints and tips. Civil registration and census websites, Parish and non-conformist registers, how to locate and use Parish registers on the internet, how to locate and use websites relating to military & migrant ancestry and other useful sites and practical exercises. . Mon 23rd Jan 2012 (10.00 - 12.30)	Chinese Landscape paintingStudents will be given an introduction to the key developments in Chinese painting. They will be encouraged to understand the function of the Chinese painting equipment such as brushes and inks/paints. Through demonstrations, they will be taught basic techniques such as mixing tones and specialist strokes. They will learn aspects of Chinese culture in relation to painting landscapes and symbolism involved and the historical significance of the medium and genre.	Seaton Delaval & Hollywell C.C.
Tues 24th Jan 2012 (13.00-15.00)	The Road to DunkirkFor this term we begin our exploration of the main theatres of the Second World War 1939—1945 commencing with ‘the Road to Dunkirk. Tues 24th Jan 2012 (10.00-12.00)	Spanish Level 3 Part 2This course is aimed at people, who have completed the Spanish Level 3 Part 1 course, or have some previous knowledge of Spanish. Tues 24th Jan 2012 (13.00-15.00)	Spanish Level 2 Part 2This course is aimed at people who have completed the Level 2 part 1 or already have previous knowledge of Spanish. We will be continuing to learn basic Spanish for practical real-life situations such as daily routines and habits, expressing likes and dislikes, talking about health matters and ordering food in a restaurant. Wed 25th Jan 2012 (10.00 - 12.00)	Intermediate GenealogyThis course is for those with some experience of genealogical research. Wed 25th Jan 2012 (10.00-16.00)	Introduction to Health & Social CareIf you are interested in working in the Care Sector this course is the first step on the way to help you gain a basic understanding of how the sector works. Thurs 26th Jan 2012 (13.00- 15.00)	Digital PhotographyYou will study the technical skills required to take, develop and print traditional photographs, as well as computer and digital skills. You will explore photography as a means of communication and developing creativity. Practical work will be supported by exploration of the work of other artists and photographers.
